76-year-old Asian man shot and killed in Philadelphia

A 76-year-old Asian man, identified by a family member as Loi Nguyen, has been shot and killed in the Juniata section of Philadelphia, PA. Reports say the shooting happened around 5a this past Tuesday on the 4200 block of Claridge Street near the intersection of East Hunting Park Avenue and L Street.

“It appears that the perpetrator was walking north in the rear driveway from Hunting Park Avenue, walked up behind this 76-year-old male and shot him one time in the back of the head. He immediately collapsed and was pronounced dead on scene,” Philadelphia Police Chief Insp. Scott Small said.

Nguyen, who was Vietnamese American, was well-known and loved by his neighbors who said he would always go out for his walk and morning exercise before sunrise. Neighbors remember him as a sweet man who always greeted everyone with a smile.

“He was not robbed, he was maliciously murdered, and it was disgusting. Great father, great grandfather, friendly neighbor,” says neighbor, Giana Cianci.

“The smile on his face takes everything. You don’t see him ever in any situation, any altercation. He’s too old for that. He doesn’t speak no English. You killed a guy that does not speak no English at all. You get nothing from that,” another neighbor, Tony Broza said.

"Just to see somebody that just walks every day, and walks the streets of Philadelphia innocently, you know, that just hurts and it takes a lot from the city," said Tony Rodriguez, who lives nearby.

Police are still investigating a motive and they are searching for the suspect. Anyone with information is asked to call or text Philadelphia police at 215-686-TIPS.
