7.7 magnitude earthquake claims the lives of more than 2,056 in Myanmar and 18 in Thailand; thousands more injured or missing
On Friday, a 7.7 magnitude earthquake struck Southeast Asia and authorities have confirmed it has claimed the lives of more than 2,056 in Myanmar and 18 in Thailand with thousands more injured or missing. This is the most powerful earthquake to strike Myanmar since 1912.
The United States Geological Survey (USGS) has estimated the final death toll could rise to more than 10,000 per a report from CNN.
Foreign aid has been pledged from China, Hong Kong, Russia, the U.K., Ireland, Australia, New Zealand, India, Singapore, South Korea, Malaysia, the U.S., and numerous aid agencies.
Reports, however, say that aid and recovery efforts will be weakened by Myanmar’s ongoing civil war.
