Anders Fung, Bay Area Councilman, attacked in San Francisco with a cement block
Anders Fung, an Asian American councilman for Millbrae, California, was attacked with a cement block this past Saturday around 5p. Fung was walking with his family at Lands End in San Francisco when two men wearing hoodies threw the cement block from at least 20 feet above and struck him in the head. Fung sustained a head injury with a 2 inch laceration and a cervical disc herniation around his neck.
"As I was just walking by the cove. I got struck by a heavy object on top of my head," Fung said to NBC Bay Area News. "And I struggled to get up. As I was getting up, I continued to see heavy objects casted very close to me." Fung’s daughter immediately chased after the attackers to take their photos and urge them to stop the attack.
“Somebody could have died from this injury. Many people have died from previous attacks to the AAPI community. And senseless violence and hateful acts such as this has to stop,” Fung continued.
Speaking to ABC7, Fung said, “I want everyone to understand it's important to speak out so that law enforcement understands it... that our policymakers understand how it impacts our community and how important it is for us to take action to stop these senseless violence and hate... it is important we bring these perps to justice so this doesn't happen again."
Fung is grateful to his kids for reacting quickly by shouting at the attackers and chasing after them. "Seeing them step up my rescue (makes me feel) if anything happens to them in the future they have this sense of responsibility and they'll step up,” Fung said.
U.S. Parks Police responded to the scene Saturday and according to Fung, the suspects have not been caught.
