Asian representation wins big at the 2022 Grammy Awards

Asian representation was on great display during music’s most important night. The show was opened by Silk Sonic (Bruno Mars and Anderson .Paak), followed by a performance by Olivia Rodrigo. Both artists went on to win some of the most coveted awards of the night.

Silk Sonic’s “Leave the Door Open” carried home four awards for group members Bruno Mars (of Filipino descent) and Anderson .Paak (of Korean descent). The group won every award they were nominated for that night.

  • Best R&B Performance

  • Best R&B Song

Olivia Rodrigo (of Filipina descent) also won three of the seven nominations she received.

  • Best New Artist

  • Best Pop Vocal Album: “Sour”

  • Best Pop Solo Performance: “Drivers License”

H.E.R.’s “Fight For You” won Best Traditional R&B Performance.

Yo-Yo Ma (of Chinese descent) and Emanuel Ax’s “Beethoven: Cello Sonatas – Hope Amid Tears” won Best Chamber Music/Small Ensemble Performance.

Jennifer Koh (of Korean descent) won Best Classical Instrumental Solo for “Alone Together.” This makes her the first Korean American to win this award.

Sangeeta Kaur (of Vietnamese descent) and Hila Plitmann won Best Classical Solo Vocal Album for “Mythologies.”

Arooj Aftab became the first-ever female Pakistani singer to win a Grammy. She won Best Global Music Performance for her song “Mohabbat.” Arooj was also nominated for Best New Artist.
