Suni Lee is the reigning all-around Olympic champion but her return to the Olympic trials was significant as she continues to recover from an incurable kidney disease which forced her to put her training on pause for at least six months.

Suni and her doctors thought she may never be able to return to gymnastics. “It feels absolutely insane,” Suni said to TODAY Show. “It was just such a hard, incredible journey. There were so many times where I thought about quitting and just giving up because I was so sick, and it was just so hard to stay motivated. Watching everybody get better and I can’t even get back into the gym. Constantly self-doubting myself. But once I had those people around me, who lifted me up and supported me, I knew this is something I wanted.”

Now, her hard work and determination has paid off, as she’s just qualified for the Paris Olympics with the second-highest all-around score of 111.675. Suni had the top score on uneven bars with a score of 29.275.
