Dylan Kesterson of Portland is charged with additional anti-Asian bias crimes
Dylan Kesterson was first arrested in July of this year for attacking a 36-year-old father and 5-year-old daughter along the Eastbank Esplanade in Portland, Oregon. Kesterson allegedly attacked the family because they were Japanese.
Police found and arrested Kesterson and booked him into the Multnomah County Jail on one count of first-degree bias crime, and two counts of second-degree bias crime. But jail records show Kesterson was released from custody the same day he was arrested.
Now, police have linked Kesterson to a separate and unrelated anti-Asian attack that occurred on April 17, as first reported by KGW8. According to their report, “police said he racially intimidated two women, assaulted one of them and harassed a third woman.”
KGW8 reports that prosecutors are seeking “upward departure,” meaning they want a sentence that’s stronger than normal since he’s linked to multiple, unrelated hate crimes motivated by race.
Additionally, a 21-year-old Japanese student who is studying in Portland says that Kesterson also attacked him. The student, Kaito Nakajima, says he saw Kesterson’s photo in the news and is sure that he is the man who verbally assaulted him and then slapped him in the face multiple times.
Nakajima has filed a police report and a bias crime detective is now investigating the incident. "So bad, so sad really because everyone, everybody is same people," Nakajima said. "So why, why I thought, why did he target Asians?"
According to Kesterson’s arrest record, he now has 17 counts of bias/hate crime charges against him with potentially more on the way.
