Elderly Asian woman fatally shot in Oakland's Little Saigon

Oakland Police arrive at the scene of the shooting in Little Saigon (Oakland, CA).

A 60-year-old Asian woman was fatally shot during an attempted robbery in Oakland, California’s Little Saigon. First reported by the East Bay Times, the shooting occurred on Sunday shortly after 2p near East 11th Street and Fifth Avenue.

“According to preliminary information released by investigators, the woman was visiting the neighborhood from another part of Oakland and sitting in a parked vehicle with a friend when she was approached from outside by a gunman who tried to rob her. But moments later, she was shot and the gunman fled the scene. The friend was unhurt, police said. No information was made available on a description of the suspect or an associated vehicle,” the East Bay Time reports.

Oakland City Councilmember and President Nikki Fortunato Bas released a statement saying, “I am outraged and sickened over the senseless, brutal slaying of an elderly Asian woman in broad daylight this afternoon in Oakland’s Little Saigon. People who perpetrate these violent crimes must be held accountable and brought to justice.”

“What does it say about our community when we cannot walk down our own street, visit a neighbor, or enjoy a picnic on the Lake on a Sunday afternoon,” Bas asked. “We can/must do better. NO ONE should presume they can come to Oakland at any time & commit a violent crime without repercussions.”

There is a reward of up to $17,500 being offered for information leading to an arrest in the murder. Anyone with tips should contact police at 510-238-3821 or 510-238-7950. Crime Stoppers of Oakland can be contacted at 510-777-8572.
