Jon M. Chu, the director behind the blockbuster musical movie ‘Wicked’ has just won Best Director at the Critics Choice Awards!

Jon was surprisingly snubbed at this year’s Golden Globe and Academy Awards, and was not nominated for Best Director. While accepting the Critics Choice Award on stage, Jon joked about being shut out. “I’m gonna win that Oscar! I’m not nominated,” he said laughing.

In his speech, Jon thanked his family, including his parents Lawrence and Ruth Chu who own Chef Chu’s, a restaurant they opened 55-years ago in Los Altos, California. “Comfort food, comfortable prices,” Jon said. “I used to dream at that bar, writing, doing my homework, wishing for the day I never have to think about homework again.”

After his win, Jon teased a bit of what to expect from Ariana Grande and Cynthia Erivo in the forthcoming sequel, ‘Wicked: For Good.’ “If you love those two women, wait until you see where their relationship goes. Wait until you see the heights that they can hit,” Jon said per Deadline. “Oz is bigger. It’s more expansive. And, in the time that we’re living in, it speaks so directly to the moment and to the courage and the consequences it takes, to some of the choices that we have to make and who you choose to become when you know the truth.”
