Man who attacked a 67-year-old Filipina woman by punching her more than 125 times has been indicted for attempted murder

On March 11th, a man was caught on camera brutally attacking a 67-year-old Filipina woman simply because she was Asian. The attacker, who was the victim’s neighbor and lived in the same building, punched her more than 125 times, repeatedly stomped on her, spat on her, and yelled racial slurs. The victim sustained bleeding of the brain, multiple facial fractures, and bruising and lacerations to the head and face.

According to the investigation, the victim passed by Esco on her way home while he called her an “Asian b*tch.” She ignored him, so he followed her into the vestibule of their building and proceeded to attack her from behind.

A neighbor witnessed the attack and called 911, according to a report from NBC4. "I started knocking on the door, and when I did that it caught his attention, and that's when he got off of her," said Yvette Crespo. "He went out that door, went to the corner, put his hands up, and roared,” she said.

42-year-old Tammel Esco, the alleged attacker was arrested, and now the Westchester County District Attorney’s office has announced Esco’s indictment charges. Esco has been indicted by a Westchester County Grand Jury for attempted murder in the second degree as a hate crime, attempted murder in the second degree, assault in the first degree as a hate crime, assault in the first degree, three counts of assault in the second degree as a hate crime, and three counts of assault in the second degree, all violent felonies.

Esco is being held without bail and his next court date is July 25th.

“This is one of the most appalling attacks I have ever seen; to beat a helpless woman is despicable and targeting her because of her race makes it more so," Police Commissioner John J. Mueller said in a statement after the attack.

Police and court records show Esco has 14 arrests and multiple convictions on his record. In February 2021, Esco pushed a woman through a plate glass window. He was given conditional discharge and no jail time. Prior to that, Esco spent more than two years in prison from 2011 to 2013 after pleading guilty to second degree assault, for stabbing his daughter's mother in 2010, court records show.
