Nymphia Wind, winner of ‘RuPaul’s Drag Race’ Season 16, was invited to meet with Taiwan’s president and perform for Taiwan’s Presidential Office
Nymphia Wind, winner of ‘RuPaul’s Drag Race’ Season 16 has another first under her belt as she became the first drag queen to perform for Taiwan’s Presidential Office. Yesterday, Taiwan’s President Tsai Ing-wen invited Nymphia Wind and her family of queens (“House of Wind”) to meet with her and showcase the art of drag with an electrifying performance.
"This is probably the first Presidential Office in the world to have a drag queen perform,” Nymphia said after her performance.
Adding context behind her dress, Nymphia explained, “This costume is inspired by the endemic yellow water lily. It is a small yellow flower, and like lilies, it grows out of the mud unstained.”
“Shantay, you stay,” President Tsai said, quoting RuPaul’s famous line. "If you can't love yourself, how you gonna love somebody else?"
Taiwan is considered a beacon for LGBTQ+ rights. In 2019, Taiwan became the very first country in Asia to legalize same-sex marriage, under President Tsai’s administration. Taipei continues to hold the largest pride parade in East Asia.
"Today's Taiwan is a global Taiwan and Nymphia is also a queen of the world," Tsai said.
