Taiwan hit by strongest earthquake in at least 25 years; tsunami warnings and advisories issued for surrounding areas
Taiwan was hit by a 7.2 magnitude (some report 7.4) earthquake on Wednesday morning during rush hour, the strongest earthquake to strike the island in at least 25 years. According to multiple reports, the disaster was centered around Hualien County. At least 9 have been killed, more than a thousand injured, and more than 87k people left without power.
Tsunami warnings were issued for Taiwan, Japan, and the Philippines but were subsequently downgraded to advisories.
“Disaster response is underway following this morning’s 7.2 earthquake and aftershocks. I’m deeply grateful for the messages of support we have received from around the world, and to our first responders for their life-saving work,” said Taiwan’s President Tsai. “My heart is with everyone affected. Please keep in touch with loved ones, and stay safe.”
Rescue efforts are underway and the damage is still being assessed.
