NYC to install security cameras on every subway car

Among other crimes, countless anti-Asian attacks have occurred on NYC’s subway system. Now, New York Governor Hochul has announced that the Metropolitan Transportation Authority (MTA) will be installing two security cameras on all of the city’s 6,400+ subway cars. The installation of the cameras is expected to be completed over the next three years.

“You think Big Brother’s watching you on the subways? You’re absolutely right,” said Gov. Hochul. “That is our intent — to get the message out that we’re going to be having surveillance of activities on the subway trains and that is going to give people great peace of mind.”

Many people say they avoid taking the subway out of safety concerns, especially when alone or late at night. Subway ridership continues to be lower than normal, currently at about 60% of pre pandemic levels. The MTA has a projected deficit of $2.5 billion within the next two years.

What do you think? Will these security cameras make you feel safer? Will they make you want to ride the subway more often? Share your thoughts in the comments.
