68-year-old Korean American small business owner brutally beaten and robbed

A 68-year-old Korean American jewelry shop owner was brutally beaten and robbed in Wilmington, Delaware. The attack happened at Solid Gold Jewelers (109 W 9th St.) in downtown Delaware on September 15th.

⚠️ [TRIGGER WARNING] Surveillance footage shows the attacker pistol-whipping the victim, Chang Suh, three times. The attacker then jumps over the counter and stomps him before beating him in the head with a hammer.

Suh is recovering from internal bleeding and brain trauma. He was in the ICU for four days and is now in a rehabilitation facility where he is relearning how to eat, walk, and talk.

The attacker, 39-year-old Calvin Ushery, is in custody and being held on $130,500 cash-only bail. His charges include robbery in the first degree, criminal mischief, and possession of a firearm by a person prohibited. This looks like attempted murder to me — where are those charges?

Steve Suh, one of the victim’s sons, has started a GoFundMe to help pay for his father’s medical bills and to help him retire. Steve says any excess funds will be donated to local Asian American non-profits and organizations.
