White House honors Vera Wang, Mindy Kaling, Joan Shigekawa, and Amy Tan with national medals for their arts and humanities work

The White House just presented the 2021 National Medals of Arts and the 2021 National Humanities Medals (the awards were delayed for a year due to the pandemic). Four Asian American women were among those who were awarded.

Vera Wang, Mindy Kaling, and Joan Shigekawa were awarded the National Medal of Arts which is the highest award given to artists, art patrons, and groups by the United States Government and honors exemplary individuals and organizations that have advanced the arts in America.

Amy Tan was awarded the National Humanities Medal which honors individuals or groups whose work has deepened the nation’s understanding of the humanities and broadened our citizens’ engagement with history, literature, languages, philosophy, and other humanities.
